Ports Tab |
|
| Printer Pooling - ONE software interface | |
| Benefits: 1. Decreases time that documents wait in print queue. 2. Simplifies Administration 3. Software (printer) handles decisions on which print device (hardware) is available and sends documents through ports in order received. |
Connected to MULTIPLE print devices
(HARDWARE) through MULTIPLE PORTS
.

that supports a network printer, such as HP Network Printers, TCP/IP or UNIX
printers (using the LPR port); Mac Printers, DEC Digital Network ports;
etc."

Scheduling Tab |
|
| Print Priorities - 2 software interfaces | |
| Benefits: 1. Managing time sensitive documents. "Available" for scheduling big documents to print during off-peak times. 2. Giving groups printer priority (AKA, your boss) | |
Same port,
same print server (computer that runs printer software,
and receives and processes documents from clients)--
same print
device (hardware)

Sharing Tab Continued (Drivers) |
|
| Available
for: 1. Windows NT 4, 3.51, 3.1. *Only NT 4 drivers will automatically be updated on the clients. 2. Windows 95 3. All other OSs must be installed manually. |
|
Sharing Tab Continued (Services) |
|
In addition to installing drivers on the client, the following Services must be installed on NT Server:
| Client | Service installed on NT Server |
| Mac (NT Server only) | Services for Macintosh |
| NetWare (NT Server only) | F+PSNW |
| UNIX | TCP/IP Printer Service |
To connect to a TCP/IP print
device (hardware) on your network (TCP/IP print service is also
referred to as LPD, which stands for Line Printer Daemon). To connect to a
printer that uses LPD service, you need to know the IP address of the
print server and the printer name as specified on the LPD print
server.

Security Tab (Auditing and Ownership also possible) |
|
Printer Security permissions CANNOT be
managed remotely by
Server Manager - period. You must use
Windows Explorer. Windows 95: you use Explorer .

Print Server Management |
|
"A print server is the
computer that connects one or more print devices (hardware) to the network and
shares them with other networked computers. A print server can also be a special
hardware device that connects a print device to the network with a net tap on
one side and a parallel or serial port on the other side."
